All in Stitches

Ahh, sweet tea.  Shouldn't be difficult to make, right?
Well, four days after Frazier and I got back from our honeymoon, I had a major mishap in the kitchen.  It all started with boiling water and the need to make that delicious drink-sweet tea.  I had just bought a pitcher which was made of old fashioned, heavy glass.  My grandmother, mother, and sister all had the same pitcher, and I had just found mine at an estate sale.  Now let me preface this by saying that I have made tea many times, but this one particular time, I didn't pay attention.  I heard the kettle whistling, picked it up, and poured the boiling water into the pitcher.
All of a sudden there was a loud "CRACK" and I jumped back.  Not being quick enough, I looked down and had a huge gash in my foot and burns down my leg from the pitcher shattering.  Don't ask me what I would have done if I had been alone, but thankfully, Frazier was in the next room.  I screamed and screamed, and he came rushing into the kitchen.  I was briefly comforted in the thought that his dad was a doctor, and he had grown up hearing all kinds of gruesome stories.  He had also experienced a horrible accident right after his senior year and could have lost an arm.  Therefore, I was thinking, "Oh thank goodness, he'll know exactly what to do."  Instead, he rushed in the room, looked at my foot, and yelled "oh my gosh, OH MY GOSH, you are cut to the BONE!!!"  Well, I lost it at that point.  Frazier insisted we call an ambulance, and I yelled back that we didn't need one.  We got me over to a chair and wrapped a towel around the injury and blood.  I had no way to hold the towel around my foot while he carried me out to the car so I screamed for a rubber band.  Frazier then proceeded to search for a rubber band with me sobbing and yelling and finally stole one off a bag of chips.

Long story short, we ended up at UAMS, and I had to get seven stitches.  (My actual foot in the photo above.  I won't post the one with all the blood...yikes!)  I had a few other cuts and burns up and down my leg.  My thoughtlessness rendered me a nice scar on the top of my foot, but honestly, it could have been much worse.  Frazier was great once he got over the initial shock, and I was so thankful he was there.
However, the lesson learned is to pay attention at all times in the kitchen and always have cold water in a glass pitcher before you pour in hot water.  I also talked with some family and friends, and they shared a few kitchen/cooking tips.

Lindsay I. says, "Don’t grab a hand towel to pull hot pans out of the oven after baking.  They’re too thin and get burn marks easily. You really do need to use an oven mitt since I’ve ruined two good towels and have a small burn scar to prove it."

Debbie J. says, "If you ever have a cold casserole dish that needs to be baked, never stick it in a hot oven.  It will shatter the dish.  Put the cold casserole in the oven and then heat the oven up."

Willie D. says, "Always turn the handles of pots towards the back of the stove.  Never have them sticking out where you could easily hit them."

Elizabeth G. says, "Never wash knives in a sink full of suds.  You can't see what you are grabbing, and it could lead to some serious cuts."

Beth H. says, "Takeout only, please."

Honeymoonin'

I love summer.  Even in Arkansas when it is 96 degrees for three weeks in a row.  Therefore, I knew I would want to go somewhere hot and near a beach for my honeymoon.  I love the mountains, Europe, and exotic jungles, but give me a beach with a cold drink in hand, and I'm in heaven.

We started researching our honeymoon pretty early in our engagement and quickly narrowed it down to Mexico and the Caribbean.  Both were warm, close to the States, and had wonderful choices of resorts.  However, Fraz and I knew we wanted a nice, all-inclusive resort, and to be honest, Mexico won out due to its affordability.  Of course, my mother was panicked over drug lords and violence, but we ended up choosing Excellence Resort Playa Mujeres near Cancun.

It ended up being a wonderful choice! I asked our married friends, looked on travel websites, and researched resorts on wedding websites to find the perfect place.  So through all these outlets, we stumbled upon our resort.  It had the luxury appeal, but the price was right in addition.  Here are the words of wisdom I have for booking a honeymoon:

Decide when is a good time to book based on the season you are going.  We went in April so we booked in the winter time before fuel went up and ended up saving around $100 on our flight.  Our resort also had a huge discount if you booked several months out.  We didn’t use a travel agent since both of us were familiar with traveling outside of the country so we definitely saved in that area.
Since it was an all-inclusive resort, the food, drinks, and taxes were already paid so it was one less thing to worry about.
I would recommend planning some excursions on the trip.  We went to the Chitzen Itza ruins and snorkeling, and I would say that the extra money was worth the fun.  It was also nice that we didn’t plan ahead for these trips; we booked them once we arrived at our resort.
Make sure you call your bank to let them know you are going out of the country.  Frazier and I did remember to do this.  HOWEVER, our friendly bank representatives did not bother to tell us that we had a $500 daily limit on our cards “for extra precaution”.   When we arrived at our resort, we had to pay the remaining balance for our stay, and after many phone calls back to the states, we finally figured out the issue and got the limit removed.
One last thing, do the research on the area you are going to visit.  For example, I have heard of some people saying they would love to go to Greece in the next few months for a trip, but they knew nothing of the riots and financial crisis that is occurring in the country.  Our visit to Cancun was perfectly safe, but I know other parts in Mexico are not.  I was well prepared knowing the violence in the area and what we should do if a crisis might have occurred.

Hope everyone is enjoying the heat, and let Arkansas Bride know if you have any other tips or lessons learned about traveling and honeymoons!

Loving my registry

Probably one of the most exciting things about getting married was registering for all those lovely items that I could never afford before.  500 thread count sheets?  Definitely!  Five piece Vera Wang china place settings?  Yes please!  Cashmere blanket?  Add it on there!  The great thing about a registry is that even though you may never get those luxury items, you can always dream.  Plus, your great-aunt Sue could always come through.
I will say that I was extremely blessed by wonderful friends and family who went above and beyond to make sure that Frazier and I had lots of fabulous items to jump start the beginning of our marriage.  However, here are the top five items that I was the most excited to receive.

Number five:  Colorful Zak!Designs bowls

I registered for these at the Full Moon here in Little Rock, and I also got some plates just like the bowls shown above.  They are so colorful and fun that I couldn't resist.  Completely dishwasher safe so I was easily sold.

Number four: McCarty's Pottery

I had heard of McCarty's Pottery before but didn't even think to register for it.  Luckily, I received a BEAUTIFUL turquoise bowl from a shower.  It's definitely a must-have for a Southern bride since it is made in Mississippi.

Number three: Dyson vacuum

Since I have a golden retriever that lives inside year round, I was keeping my fingers crossed for this item.  The Dyson is powerful, easy to use, and doesn't require any bags.  Plus, if you use a Bed, Bath, and Beyond 20% coupon, you can save quite a bit of cash!

Number two: Spode Woodland Collection

Can I just say how excited my husband was about these?!  Well, as excited as a groom can be about dishes.  It all started when my brother-in-law and sister got married, and once Frazier saw all the different animals, he was hooked.  We registered for these at Fifth Season, and the dishes display creatures such as bears, deer, and dogs.  Perfect for fall (or hunting season)!

Number one:  KitchenAid mixer

A staple for any bride even if you don't cook or bake.  I mean since it comes in pretty much any color and looks perfect on your kitchen counter, this mixer is worth it.  I have yet to use mine, but just knowing I'm prepared for some serious baking makes me sigh in relief!
